cbs 5 reporter elissa harrin scene where the crash good evening. we begin with breaking news. a car slams into a funeral home and the police suspect drag racing. the crash disrupted a funeral in progress. >> and terrifying moments for a group of funeral attendees who barely dodged the car as it crashed into the building. >> five feet. the car came from us. >> reporter: while honoring a loved ones death a group of people barely escaped death when an out of control speeding driver crashed into the lobby during a funeral service. >> literally five seconds after i entered the side room we heard what we thought was a earthquake and saw the car come through the front of the building. >> reporter: the impact took down the front door and windows. the speed limit along this section is 40 miles per hour. the police say the driver was going well over that, possibly racing another car. >> during the course of the

speed contest there may have been unsafe lane change that led to the collision. >> reporter: one person in the lobby was hit and sprayed with broken glass. taken to the hospital. the two teenagers to a trauma center with serious injuries. once they recover they face charges for reckless driving. >> reporter: construction crews boarded up the building tonight but it was moved to another location. a horrible holiday tragedy in west san jose. three people died, including a child in a fire. broke out after 11:00 last night. inside a two-story townhouse in the 3,000 bridgeport court, a couple and their 4-year-old granddaughter were trapped on the upper floor. firefighters arrived in minutes. the entire building was engulfed in flames. san jose police officer tried to help the family but it was too late. >> somehow, got a big head start on us. burned hot, fast, consumed most

of the apartment even within a 3-minute response time for us. >> reporter: neighbors say the couple had lived in the complex for about 20 years. the family member, who was staying in a nearby apartment grabbed a nearly empty fire extinguisher but it it was useless against the flames. three people including a police officer was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. a developing story tonight regarding secretary of state hilary rodham clinton, she has been hospitalized with a blood clot. clinton has been recovering from the flu and a concussion. she had been planning return to work this week but the former first lady will be monitored at a new york hospital for the next 48 hours. tonight is looking bleak, despite looking through the week, the month is almost over and we are one day away from americans getting tax hikes from the fiscal cliff.

>> reporter: senators arrived at the capitol to continue last- minute negotiations hours before the nation is set to fall off of the cliff. after a day of intense talks, senate majority leader, reid, said there will not be a deal tonight. >> this is still distance between the two sides. negotiations continue. >> reporter: if republicans and democrats can not strike a deal before midnight on monday, taxes will go up for almost every american. automatic spending cuts will kick in and millions will lose unemployment benefits. >> i want everyone to know i want to get it done but i need a dance partner. >> reporter: republicans introduced but with drew the proposal. senators say there is movement as both sides try to compromise about which americans should start paying a higher tax rate. >> this is far too much at stake for political gamesmanship. >> in an unusual move, republicans called on the

nation's number 2 democrat, vice president joe biden to help with the negotiation. >> >> they say the biggest thing is taking care of the deficit. the way they are behaving the only priority is tax rates for wealthiest americans are protected. >> >> reporter: if the deal is not reached they want the senate to introduce legislation to keep the tax credit for $250,000 a year and keep unemployment benefits, back to you. >> it was not all gridlock in washington, though, both parties were able to agree to a one-year extension of the farm bill that expired in october. once it is passed the bill extends the threat of milk prices doubling next month. consumers were facing the prospect of paying $7 a gallon if the dairy program lapsed. >> reporter: you can keep tabs on the if fiscal cliff talk, 24/7 bilogging on to our web

site, cbssf.com. checking bay area headlines, the police still searching for the police who mugged a woman and killed her dog. the woman was looking for her cell phone in her car in the tender loin on friday when a man attempted to rob here. then grab her 12-year-old dog and hurled it into traffic. the police are checking for surveillance video. the area and offering a $1,000 reward for information. the police chief, for the past 20 years, leaves his post today. craig stekler spent four decades in law enforcement. he was criticize inside 2005 for ending police response to burglar alarms. steckler will stay on for special assistant to the interim chief for the next few months. 2012 has been a bad year for homicides in the major cities. two days to go oakland is at 130 for a year. 26% increase from 2011. sanfrancisco has 67 so far.

it is say one third increase from last year. san jose's 45 is low for a city of almost a million people but it is still 12.5% higher than 2011. well, a deadly tour bus crash in oregon. how the weather conditions contributed to it and complicated rescue efforts. i don't see why they need to do it now. sunday drivers be aware. the change impacting your change if you want to park in san francisco. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

of the state near the city of pendelton. the bus crashed through a guardrail and went down an embankment a few hundred feet. rescue workers used ropes to reach survivors. three people were killed when this home made plane crashed near san diego county. it went down inside of the sycamore canyon. it was headed from san diego to phoenix. the cause of the crash is under investigation. well, as we get prepared to say good-bye to 2012 we are bidding a fond farewell to a parking perk in san francisco. why drivers will need a pocket full of change even on sundays. >> beginning next sunday, the free ride or should i say free parking is over. >> i don't see why they need to do it now. they are giving you monday and friday and saturdayed and now sunday -- saturday now, and sunday, what are they dog next, 24 hours a day? >> reporter: possibly. carla sayss it is going to

offering free rides for people celebrating new year's eve tomorrow night. for the fireworks, cal trans has free rides beginning at 11:00 p.m. with service only for southbound trains. it will offer free rides from 8:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. with lines running later that usual. for part years downtown, all of the bus and light rail is free between 7:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. there will be extended hours for light rail. part will not offer free rides but will will extend service until 3:00 a.m. >> restaurants are getting ready for the big night. sanfrancisco, south of market neighborhoods, co-owner and chef of prospect is putting the finishing touches on the menu. >> we have been gearing up all week, actually all month for new years sourcing products, writing a new menu. it really -- it almost takes the whole month of december to

christmas miracle. a girl was walking by heard yelping from the trash can. the dog was kurped up and cold. >> it was sad. it was really cold. >> she took eve home but her hand lord does not allow dogs. she is hoping he will make an exception. right now eve is at a local animal shelter and adopted out if she can not adopt her. new england, a foot of snow in some times. several feet fell. snow fell at a rate of 1-2 inches each hour at some points during the storm, creating difficult driving conditions. you know, my 7-year-old keeps asking me, when is it going to snow in the bay area.

she has her finger's crossed. >> yes. move to denver or new england but for us, no rain here for the next couple of days. it is all about the cold temperatures here for us in the bay area. right now, seeing 40s, upper 40s, low 50s. 50 right now in san francisco. 47 in concord and san jose. overnight tonight, expect some areas of frost, widespread frost, in those inland valleys with the temperatures, falling below freezing at a lot of spots. clear and cool. all across the coast and bay. so, we are watching the ridge of high pressure, pretty much keeping it dry. sunshine, clear skies today. the low continues to move farther towards the south. so, timing things out with future cast and show you what is going on. new year's eve night. we have a bit of unsettled weather. you could see a drop or two. we are keeping a slight chance of very light rain in the forecast for new year's eve night, afternoon, into the evening. for the most part, it will be

cold. cold and dry. and then new year's day looks like we will see plenty of sunshine for the most part throughout the day. continuing throughed with throughout the day. so, your overnight lows, seeing areas, once again, at freezing or below, livermore coming in at 30 degrees. only 29 in santa rose a. 34 in san jose. and 36 out in oakland. tomorrow's highs are slightly below average for this time of the year. maybe 5 degrees or so for the end of december. it will feel cool once again. 50 in san rafael, 52 in fremont and 51 out in napa and santaa rosa. if you are doing traveling around northern california, for the most part, we are looking at dry skies for tomorrow. laka tahoe, a freight day to head up, do skiing, tons of powder. there are are no chain requirements right now at interstate 80 or highway 50. fresno, cloudy skies there. plenty of sunshine out in sacramento. here is the forecast over the next several days. once again we are keeping that
